No Time to Read? Tune In and Listen!

As a parent, you probably don’t have the luxury of kicking back, putting your feet up, and burying yourself in a book. Podcasts are the preferred choice for many who want to hear different perspectives on a variety of topics. Whether you are traveling, or busy carpooling, podcasts are a great way to learn something new or connect with others on a special topic. There is so much helpful information available to parents of special needs children, though, and you want to soak in as much as possible.

Special needs podcasts abound. Here are a few picked just for you:

  • The Coffee Klatch Special Needs Radio. Believing that a parent is a child’s best advocate, the Coffee Klatch Special Needs Radio podcasts help their listeners become a more informed and educated parent. As their site says, “Award winning, world renowned authors, psychiatrists, psychologists, physicians, advocates and respected children's foundations join us to help you better understand a special needs child.... and yourself.”
  • The BAM Radio Network Special Education Channel. The BAM Radio Network was created for parents, but soon also caught the attention of educators and school administrators. Some recent podcast topics include “Writing Tools and Technologies for Special Needs Students” and “How Can Body Activated Learning Help Special Needs Students?
  • Special Parents Confidential. This podcast site bills itself as a parent’s “online support group source for dependable advice and information.” Special Parents Confidential focuses on topics such as diagnosis, coping, assistive technology, insurance, government, and relocation, among many others.
  • The Truth about Special Needs. Started by parents of a special need child, The Truth about Special Needs “is a place for special families to discuss some of the things that others might not know about or be able to relate to.” Some of their recent podcasts include “What We’re Thankful For” and “Can You Say That,” a discussion of what terms are acceptable when referring to a special needs child.
  • Unexceptional Moms: Hope and Encouragement for Special Needs Parents. The unexceptional moms who host this podcast want parents of special need children to know they are not alone. They invite listeners to join them in the journey as they “navigate the joys and challenges of raising children with disabilities.” Recent podcast topics have included “Tips on Vacationing With Kids With Disabilities,” “Helping Our Children With Learning Disabilities,” and “Surviving the Summer With Kids With Disabilities.”

Even when there’s no time for reading, there’s always time for listening! Check out these podcasts for a little education and a lot of inspiration.  Any favorites you’d like to share?  Tell others about it on our Community Forum.
